World Delirium Awareness Day March 13 2024

World Delirium Awareness Day aims to increase early recognition and intervention of delirium by raising awareness of the latest research, guidelines, and best practices in the field. With delirium, people have times when they're suddenly confused and unaware of what's going on around them. They may become agitated and restless or withdrawn. Delirium can be very upsetting for family members to watch. If your loved one develops signs of delirium, let their healthcare provider know right away. In some cases, the cause of the delirium can be treated. In others, steps can be taken to help manage delirium and ensure your loved one’s safety and comfort.

The most important step in dealing with delirium is to identify it. Most times it is a sign of a worsening medical condition or side effects. Watch out for confusion and treat it as a medical emergency. Patients with delirium may be afraid and may need reassurance that people are trying to help them.

The best way to treat delirium is to fix the underlying cause by:

• Treating medical problems and/or stopping medications.
• Talking with your provider to make sure all the medications you take are needed.
• Wearing glasses and hearing aids. This can help to prevent delirium and (if it is present) help you to recover more quickly.
• Drinking enough fluids.
• Following healthy sleep habits.
• Health care providers can also support the patient and family by providing information and meeting basic comfort needs.
