Talk #1: Introductions and Meetup Updates (Chris Fregly and Antje Barth)

Talk #2: Intelligent Governance of NLP Document Processing Pipelines for Regulated Industries by Greg Coquillo, Technology Manager for Amazon’s Private Brands Division

Processing large documents like PDFs and static images is a cornerstone of today’s highly regulated industries. From healthcare information like doctor-patient visits and bills of health, to financial documents like loan applications, tax filings, research reports, and regulatory filings, these documents are integral to how these industries conduct business. The mechanisms by which these documents are processed and analyzed, however, are often manual, time-consuming, error-prone, expensive, and not easily scalable.

Fortunately, recent innovations in this space are helping companies improve these methods. Machine learning (ML) techniques such as optical character recognition (OCR) and natural language processing (NLP) enable firms to digitize and extract text from millions of documents and understand the content, including contextual nuances of the language within them. Furthermore, you can then transform the extracted text by merging it with supplemental data to produce additional business insights.

In this talk, I will describe a step-by-step natural language processing (NLP) pipeline which extracts, transforms, and enriches documents for regulated industries.

Speaker Bio: Greg Coquillo, Technology Manager for Amazon's Private Brands Division, provides "Compliance as a Service" to Amazon's customers. He promotes trust by ensuring products are sold safely while meeting import and regulatory requirements in all countries where Amazon does business using automated machine learning workflows.

Talk #3: RStudio with AWS AI services and Amazon SageMaker by Alex Lemm, AI/ML TechBD Public Sector, AWS

In this talk full of demos, we will show how to get started with the AWS AI/ML cloud from your locally installed RStudio Desktop IDE. In the first part of our session, we will demonstrate how to use the fabulous paws package to connect to AWS's AI Services to add Deep Learning (DL) capabilities like object detection, text translation or text-to-speech conversion to your R and Shiny applications. You don't need to be a DL expert to do this. In the second part, we will focus on how to use RStudio as a remote control for Amazon SageMaker to train, evaluate, and deploy Machine Learning models in the cloud. Along the way, you will learn about the benefits of Machine Learning in cloud and how Amazon SageMaker can expand your existing toolkit.

Speaker Bio: Alex works as an AI/ML TechBD supporting Public Sector customers. Before joining AWS, he worked as a data science consultant with focus on manufacturing and as a product manager of a Machine Learning models execution platform. Since 2011, he is an R user. Alex created R packages to bridge the gap between open source and commercial products and published various tutorials to show how R users benefit from the AWS AI/ML stack.
