The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on our societies and economies, causing horrendous human suffering and significant socioeconomic consequences. Being subjected to an overwhelming rise in the demand for urgent care, all health services have been placed under severe strain. Each COVID-19 wave diverts resources away from patients with other healthcare needs such as cancer. Non-COVID-19 patients have faced service disruption, which too often result in delayed or missed diagnoses and, in worst cases, medical care has been foregone. Cancer patients are faced with significant challenges in terms of access to care during the pandemic and the added stress of visiting hospital alone due to visitor restrictions. The pandemic has also disrupted prevention programmes, screening and early detection services.
This Policy Dialogue discussed the impact of treatment delays and disruptions to the cancer care pathway, reflecting on lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic for the future of cancer care while also focusing on the implementation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
