The Future Of Policing In The District A Roundtable Discussion On Reform

On May 4, 2021 CCE, in partnership with the D.C. Auditor, hosted "The Future of Policing in the District," the first in a series of forums on timely criminal justice topics in the District.

About the program: In response to passionate protests calling for defunding the police, D.C. established the Police Reform Commission in 2020. On April 1, 2021, that Commission released its recommendations on alternatives to policing, police discipline policies, the use of conflict resolution and restorative justice practices, the role of police in public schools, and the implementation of emergency reforms enacted in 2020. The Commission’s wide-ranging and bold proposals followed reports by the D.C. Auditor and the District Task Force on Jails & Justice which also made recommendations to improve policing in the District. This virtual forum featured a moderated discussion among local experts about the reform proposals and what they see as a realistic path forward.

Panelists included:
o Kenethia Alston, Mother of Marqueese Alston/Activist
o Chanell Autrey, Government Affairs Professional
o Robert Bobb, Co-Chair, D.C. Police Reform Commission
o Monica Hopkins, Executive Director, ACLU-DC
o Christy Lopez, Co-Chair, D.C. Police Reform Commission
o Patrick A. Burke, Executive Director, DC Police Foundation

The event was moderated by D.C. Auditor Kathy Patterson.
