Questions You Should Ask Your Pharmacist

Making the most out of every visit. “When you go pick up a medication for the first time, it’s really important that you talk to your pharmacist about what you’re getting, so that you know what you’re taking and how to get the best effects from it,” said Lee Health ambulatory pharmacist Julianna Hennig.

It’s a good idea to build a relationship and ask questions when you see your pharmacist. “Give them your list and say is there any food I should avoid with this? Is there anything I need to worry about with taking your medication‘s with food or taking them without food?” said Hennig.

Pharmacists are medication experts. They can be a good resource if you’re experiencing side effects. “Is this normal? Is this something to be expected with this medication or is this something that I need to stop the medication for or seek other medical treatment for?” said Hennig. “Maybe it’s just a counseling point that they can provide you, but also a pharmacist sometimes has easier access to the provider, so we can get a hold of them as well and make a recommendation for a change in medication.”

You should also tell them if you have any allergies or intolerances to prescriptions. “If you did not tolerate a medication well that’s something we can put in your chart and we know for future,” said Hennig. Improving your health by utilizing the entire care team around you.
