EXODUS 1 PHARAOH'S FEAR
Exodus Chapter 1 Summary:
After the death of Joseph and his generation, the Israelites grew in numbers and became a large population in Egypt. Fearing their increasing strength and potential alliance with enemies, the new Pharaoh, who did not know Joseph, decided to oppress the Israelites. They are subjected to harsh labor, building storied cities like Pithom and Raamses for Pharaoh. However, the more they are oppressed, the more they multiply.
Seeing this, Pharaoh gives a cruel command to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill all Hebrew male babies at birth. The midwives, fearing God, disobey Pharaoh's command and let the male babies live. When questioned by Pharaoh, they justify their actions by saying that Hebrew women give birth quickly before they can get to them. Because of their obedience to God, the midwives are blessed with families of their own.
Despite this setback, Pharaoh decrees that every Hebrew boy born should be thrown into the Nile, but girls may live.
