Artist Talk With Nalleli Cobo

Welcome to my Artist Talk mini-series, Activism During the Time of COVID-19, with heroes from my current exhibition, "Transcendients: Heroes at Borders” at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.

Today, we are speaking with Nalleli Cobo, a young activist fighting for environmental justice and clean communities in LA. Co-Founder of South LA Youth Leadership Coalition and member of STAND LA, Cobo leads the movement #PeopleNotPozos to end oil drilling in neighborhoods for the health and safety of communities living on the front lines of urban oil extraction.

Earlier this year Cobo was diagnosed with cancer, and her health took a turn. She has been documenting her journey on Instagram. As we catch up with her over Zoom, take a moment to hear her talk about her experience fighting for environmental justice, and taking on cancer treatments during a pandemic.
