The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) research highlights both the tremendous prevalence of early exposure to adversity and its link to poor health in adulthood, as well as poor educational outcomes. It is critical for providers to understand the research on how trauma impacts health in order to optimally treat patients. Pediatricians and other child health professionals play an important role in the lives of families, and need to explore how to best apply this ACEs research in their daily practice. This panel will examine approaches to identifying and responding to ACEs including screening and universal education (anticipatory guidance), tailored approaches for different settings, as well as consider unforeseen risks if a trauma-informed system is not built in conjunction with screening. How can we ensure that programs have the systems in place to meet the needs of children exposed to trauma, and a trained workforce to promote healthy and resilient individuals, families and communities?
