9 Year Old Starts Dog Treat Business To Avoid Chores

BLUE ASH, Ohio (WKRC) - Some children will do anything to get out of doing their chores. Monica Simon Thomas, 9, is one of them. She started her own business making dog treats so she wouldn't have to do laundry, take out the trash or mop the floor.

"I'm making dog treats because I absolutely hate chores," Monica said from her kitchen.

Monica is very busy. She takes piano lessons, plays competitive chess and takes lessons in Mandarin Chinese. She started Fluff Ball Treats last November to make extra money. For a 9-year-old, she's a savvy businesswoman.

"So I chose dog treats because a lot of people have dogs and are willing to spend money on their dogs which I think is kind of weird," Monica said.

Monica's father, Eric, said when she approached him about the idea, he thought it was clever. He and his wife have been supportive of her endeavor.

" I always think the more initiative people show the better. And it can also serve them later in life," said Eric Simon Thomas.

So far, Monica has made $500 from selling the treats. While Monica's earning money, she's also learning some valuable lessons in business.

"It started by me putting in $15 and I've already paid myself back. I'm not paying myself now so that probably impacts the profit," Monica said.

The sky is the limit for Monica and her Fluff Ball Treats. Despite her busy schedule, she will start a coding class at the public library next week so she can learn how to build a website for her business. The coding class is a present for her 10th birthday.
