On December 10, 2003, the Whitakers returned home from a dinner and were each shot by a gunman inside the house upon opening the door. Mother Tricia and youngest son Kevin both died that night; older son Bart and father Kent survived. Later, authorities discovered that Bart was the mastermind behind his family's murders.
