And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Breakdown
To be crucified with Christ, we keep our fleshly appetite nailed to the Cross. This does not mean self-crucifixion or self-mortification. Our endeavors and training do not fulfill this. It is not attained by self-effort and self-reliance but by permitting the life of Christ to grow and develop within as we submit to the Holy Spirit and look to Jesus for our sufficiency and endurance. Crucifixion was a term used to describe a method of putting something to death. The process was slow, persistent, and very painful to the body. In the Christian sense, it was meant to cause us to see a parallel to the selflessness of Christ, who forsook His own will, desires, emotions, affections, comfort, and even His very life to honor and obey the will of God against the will of His own fleshes desire, and what should be our daily effort to do the same.
Definition of Crucified
Put (someone) to death by nailing or binding them to a cross, especially as an ancient punishment.
Today's Devotional
We have the power of the Spirit dwelling inside of us. Daily we must remind the flesh it has no authority over us anymore. Our desires are of the Spirit now and no longer of the flesh.
