What is monkeypox?
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a zoonotic viral infection caused by the mpox virus (MPXV), a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus. It primarily occurs in Central and West Africa, but recent outbreaks have been reported globally, including in non-endemic regions. Transmission can occur through direct contact with infected animals, humans, or contaminated materials. Diagnosis involves clinical evaluation and laboratory confirmation using PCR. Treatment is mainly supportive, with antiviral agents like tecovirimat available for severe cases. The smallpox vaccine (JYNNEOS, ACAM2000) provides some protection against mpox. The 2022-2023 and 2024 global outbreaks emphasized the need for vigilant surveillance and public health preparedness.
Mpox outbreak 2024 was declared emergency by WHO.
