The free flow of information and trust in its authenticity are essential pillars of a democratic society. Yet cheapfakes, deepfakes, and generative artificial intelligence are already being maliciously employed to undermine public confidence in traditional sources of news and government information.
In an event hosted by the International Security Program, CSIS experts facilitated a discussion with industry professionals leading up to the 2023 Summit for Democracy. The event highlighted the potential for new tools to establish authenticity standards in media and online content. It also demonstrated some active use cases of content provenance standards developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity and Content Authenticity Initiative.
This event is made possible by general support to CSIS.
