The Senate has voted to acquit former President Donald Trump on a charge of inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The vote was 57-43, but a conviction in the Senate requires a two-thirds majority, or 67 votes.
The vote came after an emotional days-long trial in which House managers called on senators to draw on their own experience as witnesses to the attack, which killed five people, painting the insurrection as the result of Trump's directives that day, and years more of violent rhetoric. Trump's defense team accused the House of a rushed impeachment trial without evidence of what the former president knew and when.
Trump is the first president to be impeached twice by the House. He has now been twice acquitted by the Senate.
