Leaders across Europe marked the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two with their own low-key VE Day ceremonies due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Britain's Prince Charles led a nationwide two-minute silence outside his family's Balmoral estate as military jets flew over the United Kingdom's four capitals. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall paid respect by laying a wreath and flowers at a memorial outside Balmoral.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson also marked the occasion by observing silence from his office in London, England.
German Chancellor Merkel led a ceremony at Germany's central war memorial, called Neue Wache, which honours the victims of war and dictatorship.
French President Emmanuel Macron led a simple ceremony at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Friday, with the coronavirus crisis forcing authorities to pare down commemorations across the country.
