US long-range B-2 stealth bombers launched airstrikes targeting underground bunkers used by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. However, the United States wasn’t immediately clear on what damage was done in the strikes. There are no previous reports of the B-2 Spirit being used in the strikes targeting the Houthis. The Houthis’ al-Masirah satellite news channel reported airstrikes around Yemen’s capital, Sana'a, and its stronghold of Saada. The B-2 bombers targeted “5 hardened underground weapons storage locations in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen”. The strike also appeared to be an indirect warning to Iran, the Houthis’ main benefactor. It was a unique demonstration of the US’ ability to target its adversaries’ facilities to keep out of reach. The Red Sea has become a battlefield for shippers since the Houthis began targeting ships in the waterway. Houthis have targeted over 80 merchant vessels with missiles and drones since the Gaza war began in Oct 2023.
