The president's comments appeared to back the concept of herd immunity. It has been largely discredited as a strategy for tackling the virus because it would risk millions of deaths in a big country such as the US, to reach the 60% to 70% infection rate baseline. Early in March, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson endorsed that method as well. But after a study by Imperial College London suggested that such an approach would quickly overwhelm Britain’s National Health Service, Johnson reversed his herd immunity policy.
The US is at 15,337,091 cases right now, and yet the Trump Administration’s failure to secure the second batch of COVID vaccine from Pfizer is risking the future of immunization across the country. It was reported that Pfizer offered additional 100 million doses after the original deal in late summer, but the administration turned it down. The company then sold the rest around the world. As a result, the next available batch for the US can only be delivered after June or July next year.
