U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an emergency authorization for the use of convalescent plasma in helping treat patients with COVID-19. He also claimed the treatment could reduce the mortality by 35 per cent.
Convalescent plasma is made using the blood of people who have recovered from the coronavirus disease. Like blood, there is a limited supply and must come from donors.
The FDA said more than 70,000 patients have been treated using convalescent plasma, stating that the "known and potential benefits of the product outweigh the known and potential risks."
