During the Second World War, there were horrific scenes in French Towns and the population and Resistance wanted to punish women who slept with the Germans. These women were seen as terrible traitors and they were punished and subjected to 'The Ugly Carnival.' Thousands of women had their heads shaved and were treated to this humiliating ordeal, and they were forced to run the gauntlet. But one French woman who's torturous ordeal scarred her for the rest of her life was Simone Touseau.

Simone Touseau had been in a relationship with a German soldier for years, and she had a child but she was then arrested for 'horizontal collaboration,' and she was brought to Chartres for her ordeal. She had her head shaved and was branded with a hot iron, before she was forced to run home through the crowds who wanted to hit her. But the image of her was one of the most harrowing of the war. But her ordeal would affect her for the rest of her life.
