Will Ferrell returns to the holiday movie genre with the incredibly high-concept Spirited on Apple TV+ — and he brought Ryan Reynolds and Octavia Spencer along for the ride. Spirited presents Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in a bold new fashion, and it’s also a musical. Unlike all the straightforward Christmas romcoms you’ve been bingeing on cable, this holiday movie has a whole lot going on. But will Spirited lift your spirits or make you say “bah humbug”? SPIRITED: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: Will Ferrell stars as the Ghost of Christmas Present, one of the most essential ghosts at the afterlife office that handles haunting one jerk every Christmas Eve in the hopes that they’ll change their ways. His co-workers include the Ghost of Christmas Past (Sunita Mani from GLOW) and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (voiced by Tracy Morgan, which is a hilariously unhinged choice and a joke that never gets old). After successfully getting one nightmare neighbor to change her ways, the department of holiday haunts sets its sights on next year’s perpetrator — and then Present makes them ditch their plans and instead target ghoulish public relations opportunist and fake-outrage instigator Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds). Of all the souls that have been haunted over the past 150+ years, Briggs proves to be the most cunning and stubborn of them all. He even manages to turn all of the turmoil-inducing self-examination onto Present, thus wrecking a precisely planned haunt and putting a whole lot of innocent souls on the line. Photo: Claire Folger / Apple TV+What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Speaking of those songs — the vibe that I kept getting from Spirited every time it busted out into song, which is many times, was that of the Broadway numbers performed in front of Macy’s during the Thanksgiving Day parade. Maybe this is because I have zero knowledge of musical theater, or maybe it’s because songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen) are responsible for how all mainstream musicals sound today, but these musical numbers just sound a lot like musical numbers. The intricate rules that the ghosts adhere to in order to pull off a haunt made me think of how Everything Everywhere All at Once made an old concept like the multiverse feel fresh and real, but I do not want to get your hopes up that Spirited is the Everything Everywhere All at Once of Christmas movies! It is nowhere near that good, but few movies are! Performance Worth Watching: She doesn’t get nearly enough to do, but Lily Sullivan (The Righteous Gemstones) — absolutely crushes every scene she’s in as the HR ghost Margo. Memorable Dialogue: And to quote Margo talking to Present about how much she misses being alive: “God I miss drinking. I used to go so hard with my girls back in Tampa. I have a tramp stamp on the front and the back. We were crazy; we stole a cruise ship one time.
