South Australia has canned its three largest suburban Anzac Day dawn services due to difficulties meeting COVID-19 regulations.
Complying with COVIDSafe management plans would have meant erecting barricades at the sites, implementing QR codes and hiring crowd management staff – amassing costs unable to be covered by the RSL club member volunteers.
With 10,000 to 15,000 people on average attending each event in previous years, the cancellation of the Morphett Vale, Semaphore and Brighton services will see many people unable to commemorate Anzac Day in person.
The Adelaide Dawn Service will go ahead but the suburbs will only host private events capped at 500 people inside RSL clubs.
