Angela Irizarry was born with extremely complex single ventricle heart disease. Right now, children born with single ventricle heart disease must undergo multiple open-heart surgeries as they grow, to replace the grafts used in surgery for repair. But Angela was the first patient in the United States to receive a tissue-engineered vascular graft made by her own cells, so it grows with her and eliminates the need for future surgeries. The technology shows incredible promise for kids everywhere; and clinical trials are ongoing at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
