Murder suspect Kaitlin Armstrong pleaded not guilty to murder charges during her first court appearance on Wednesday. She’s accused of killing elite cyclist Anna “Mo” Wilson while she was in Austin for a race back in May. During the hearing, Armstrong’s counsel requested a speedy jury trial.
Criminal defense attorney Amber Vasquez says that’s not a rare move.
“It's not abnormal. And in fact, it's required in Texas, you have to affirmatively invoke your speedy trial rights to actually have them apply,” she said.
Armstrong’s attorney Rick Cofer said there’s a lot more to this story that hasn’t been heard.
“Miss Armstrong wants her day in court. She wants a trial,” said Cofer.
Armstrong’s attorneys told a judge they were prepared for a speedy trial. But Prosecutors are pushing back saying it’s too soon for that to happen because they haven’t received all the evidence in the case.
Vasquez adds an issue that could come up is a change of venue.
