India on Monday recalled its High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, along with other diplomats, amid escalating tensions between the two nations. This move follows recent diplomatic communications from the Trudeau government, which identified Verma and other officials as “persons of interest” in an ongoing investigation. While the MEA's statement did not specify a particular case, reports indicate that it is linked to the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has strongly rejected what it calls the "preposterous imputations" made by Canada, accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of pushing a political agenda rooted in "vote bank politics." In 2023, Trudeau had accused India of involvement in the killing of Nijjar. But, according to India, the Canadian government has failed to provide any evidence to support the claim. In response to the latest communication from Canada, India today summoned Stewart Wheeler, Canada’s chargé d’affaires in New Delhi.
