(9 Jan 2020) Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has said the recent developments involving Iran demonstrate that former Vice President Joe Biden is much more qualified than President Donald Trump to handle foreign policy and national security.
Kerry was campaigning for Democratic presidential candidate Biden in Adel, Iowa, when he made the remarks on Wednesday.
"Americans in the region, our diplomats included particularly, are less safe today than they were before the president's decision," Kerry commented, referring to the US drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Iraq last week.
Kerry also said "it's tragic to have a president who is really turning his back on the most important notion as president, which is how do you keep Americans safer."
Kerry said the 2015 Iran nuclear deal had been working and now that Trump has pulled the United States out of it, he wants a new agreement that does exactly the same thing.
"What the president has done is abandon our allies and actually insult the people who helped make this agreement and turned to dictators in other countries, who he seems to prefer over democrats."
Kerry also commented on speculation that Iran intentionally missed its targets when it fired missiles at bases in Iraq that house U.S. troops.
"I do know this, that Iran knows how to hit a target. When they bombed the targets in Saudi Arabia, 17 of the 20 were within one meter of the bull's eye," Kerry said.
The United States House of Representatives were voting Thursday on a measure limiting Trump's ability to take military action against Iran as Democratic criticism of the U.S. killing of Soleimani intensified.
