"I don't think science knows, actually," Trump said at a Monday briefing with officials in McClellan Park, California, with a laugh.
He told Wade Crowfoot, secretary of California's Natural Resources Agency: "It'll start getting cooler. You just watch."
Crowfoot had warned the President of the dangers of ignoring the science and putting "our head in the sand and thinking that it's all about vegetation management."
President Donald Trump arrived in Sacramento Monday to get a first-hand report on the devastation left behind by the state’s historic outbreak of wildfires and quickly stepped into the fray of the ongoing climate-change debate.
During the briefing on the wildfires, the President stepped straight into the raging debate over climate change and his administration’s politics toward global warming.
Early on in the briefing, California Governor Gavin Newsom stated “the evidence is in” regarding the reality of climate change and asked that the President respect “the difference of opinion as it relates to this fundamental issue.”
Governor Newsom also allowed that the state could do a better job of forest management.
When California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot countered, “I wish science agreed with you,” the President without hesitation said, “Well, I don’t think science knows.”
