If you’ve heard the song, you’re familiar with the lyrics:

“Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there”

With the well-known Simon & Garfunkel song, these words became famous, but the lyrics and melody are said to date back to the 17th century. Scarborough Fair was an actual medieval fair in the 13th century, and the lyrics are asking a friend to see if his love still remembers him. He says she’ll be his true love on the condition that she completes a list of impossible tasks (sewing a delicate shirt without seams or a needlework). She gives her own list of impossible tasks for him to complete first… a story of unrequited impossible love.
The herbs mentioned each have great significance. In medieval times through the 17th century when the words were written, herbs were an important part of everyday life as medicines for the body and soul.

Each herb is a symbolic part of this love poem that is offered to the lost love. Parsley is a cleansing herb, removing bitterness in the heart. Sage brings wisdom and longevity. Rosemary symbolizes remembrance, with its aroma that sweetly lingers. Thyme symbolizes courage, with thyme very commonly embroidered by lovers on the clothing of knights going into battle.

In this ceramic jewelry dish, I capture each of these beautiful herbs together, touched with subtle shades of green. Each herb impression is from a real herb sprig pressed into ceramic clay. They are handpainted, glazed, and fired in a kiln to over 2200F to vitrify the clay and melt the glaze, giving the soft glossy finish of the glass coating. Real gold is added to the dish and rim, giving a subtle sparkles here and there.
