How Saddam Hussein Ruled Iraq With Fear And Control

Saddam Hussein's regime, known for using terror against his own people, is believed to have killed a quarter-million Iraqis. After losing wars with neighboring countries, his brutal rule included several war crimes.

Saddam rose to power through his leadership of the Baath Party, which seized power in a coup in 1968. Although he effectively held power from the beginning, he asserted his totalitarian authority in the late 1970s.

The Iraq War began in 2003, with the invasion of the country by US-led coalition forces. Two years later, he was tried in an Iraqi court and found guilty of crimes against humanity. Saddam was publicly hanged in December 2006.
