Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was just a part of a large expansion campaign in the Pacific. Their forces invaded multiple territories held by the USA and other Allied countries. This included a small atoll called Wake Island. Americans realized a potential strategic importance and began improving its defenses in mid 1941. Apart from coastal gun batteries, AAA and a Marine battalion, the most important asset was a Marine fighter squadron VMF-211 with twelve F4F-3 Wildcats.
