This is an introduction to video artist and theorist Hito Steyerl's essay "In Defense of the Poor Image" (2009). The video provides an overview of the basic ideas outlined in the essay, and pays special attention to the essay's references to theorist Walter Benjamin's essay "The Work of Art in the Age of its Technological Reproducibility" (1935), showing how Steyerl positions her essay as a kind of update of Benjamin's essay for the digital age.
