We all know Einstein is famous for his theory of General Relativity, but what if he never came up with it? Never fear, Hilbert is here!
Let me tell you about Hilbert's theory of General Relativty, which was first published 5 days before Einsteins on the 20th November 1915. David Hilbert was a renowned Mathematician and regularly corresponded with Einstein about their two competing theories.
In the end, Einstein's approach was more physically intuitve and his derivation of the field equations caused Hilbert to credit him with the discovery. In truth, Hilberts rigorous mathematical appraoch led to a deeper understanding of Einsteins theory and a wider acceptance of this new way of thinking.
Both men made great contributions to General Relativity, without either one the world and our understanding might be different today.
