About 5,700 pounds of cargo hitched a ride on a Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station.
It’s a mission that has become almost routine for SpaceX, but this mission is just a bit different. Among the supplies packed into the Dragon cargo ship at Cape Canaveral are 40 genetically engineered "mighty mice" – and barley seeds used to brew beer.
No, it’s not a recipe for an interspecies party in space. It’s all about science.
Astronauts will study the rodents’ muscle and bone loss in zero gravity, and they’ll figure out how space affects the germination and malting of barley.
The second experiment is being done for Budweiser. According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Anheuser-Busch has been sending barley seeds to the ISS since 2017. The company wants to learn how to brew beer in space so it can eventually set up shop on the surface of Mars.
