Ethical Issues In Cancer Care Raised During The Covid 19 Pandemic

This lecture is co-presented by UHN Bioethics and the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics, and is part of the JCB Bioethics Seminar Series.

Speaker:

Jonathan Marron, MD, MPH, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital, Center for Bioethics, Harvard Medical School

About the lecture:

Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted nearly all aspects of our lives, and the care for patients with cancer is no different. COVID-19 has required drastic changes in how oncology clinicians interact with and care for patients with cancer and their families. These changes raise numerous important but very challenging ethical issues. In this lecture, the 39th Annual Philippa Harris Lecture on Bioethical Issues in Cancer Care, Dr. Jonathan Marron will explore some of the many ethical considerations raised in the care of patients with cancer during the pandemic. Dr. Marron, a pediatric oncologist, bioethicist, and health services researcher at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, will examine several of the ongoing ethical challenges faced by practicing oncologists, including those related to resource allocation, communication, and moral distress.

The Philippa Harris lecture was established by Mr. and Mrs. Bill and Pat Harris in 1981 to celebrate the life of their daughter, Pippa, who died from cancer at the age of twenty. The lecture is shared between the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the UHN Bioethics Program, and the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics.
