STORYLINE:
In his home city of Tikrit people gathered in the mosque on Thursday to mark the end of 40 days of mourning for Saddam Hussein.
The former leader was executed on December 30, 2006, after a court sentenced him to death for crimes against humanity, including the killing of 148 Shiite Muslims following an assassination attempt against him in 1982.
AP Television filmed a sunni cleric addressing a group of people in the Mosque.
Jum'a al Atawi told followers at the Mosque that Saddam Hussein would not be forgotten.
"We will say this the leader of the Arab and Islamic Nation Saddam Hussein, who stood against blasphemy and tyranny," he said.
Outside the Mosque, a banner gave its condolences for the death of the former president.
Saddam's half brother Barzan Ibrahim and Bandar Awad, former head of the Revolutionary Court, were also sentenced to death in November 2007 and hanged last month.
