Thinning lips are a common concern among patients. Some patients naturally have thin lips. Some patients find that over the passage of time their lips become thinner. There are really two ways to improve lips. One is with the use of a filler and the other way is with a surgical technique.

So a filler is a technique that’s performed in the office, takes perhaps a few minutes to perform. Fillers generally last about 6 months to a year and with fillers we’re able to create a fuller or more volumized lip, so this addresses the thinness of lips that concerns some patients. The nice thing about fillers is they take only a few minutes to perform and they really have minimal to no recovery. Most patients after filler to the lips would resume their ordinary activities immediately following the procedure.

The other method of addressing their lips is a surgical method known as direct lip lift. This is a surgical procedure where a small incision is created where the pink of the lip meets the white of the lip. It can be performed on the upper lip or on the lower lip and the pink of the lip is actually rolled out to create a fuller, more voluptuous, more volumized appearing lip.

The advantage to a direct lip lift, either of the upper lip or of the lower lip or both the upper and lower lips, is that the direct lip lift is a permanent procedure that lasts for many, many years. The disadvantage to the direct lip lift is that it’s a minor surgical procedure that does have some recovery time associated with it. The advantage to the filler is that it’s a quick procedure performed in the office with minimal to no recovery time.
