Afghan Looters Ransack Us Military Base After Troops Fled In Dead Of Night

AFGHAN looters ransacked a US military base swiping laptops, speakers and guitars after American troops fled in the dead of night.

Hundreds of soldiers have attempted to escape Taliban forces as the terror group sweeps the country and leaves it on the verge of collapse.

It means Afghanistan's Bagram Air Base, which housed up to 100,000 people at one stage, now sits empty after almost 20 years.

Troops slipped away without notifying the new Afghan commander, who only found out about their departure hours later.

Military officials shared photos of the sprawling base, providing a rare first glimpse of what was the epicentre of America's war to unseat the Taliban and hunt down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks.

But before the local army could take control, the airfield's barracks were invaded by looters.

They made off with computers, stereos and basketballs before being evicted, according to Afghan military officials.

A senior Afghan government official said: "They (Americans) are completely out now and everything is under our control, including watchtowers, air traffic and the hospital."

Photos from the base, which is part of a campaign that has cost the US military $816 billion and 2,312 lives, according to the Department of Defense, show dozens of vehicles left behind.
