Ways To Reduce The Risk Of Bowel Cancer

Dr. John Marshall discusses the four major factors that can reduce the risk of developing colon cancer, as well as subsequently reducing the risk of cancer recurrence. A daily regimen including a dose of aspirin, exercise, moderate sun exposure to improve endogenous vitamin D production, and introducing more tree nuts into meals, like almonds and cashews, can reduce both incidence and recurrence of colon cancer.

There are four things that we know today that reduced the risk of getting colon cancer and actually reduce the risk of colon cancer coming back. We don't understand why these four things work, but they work. The first one and the most important one of the bunch is exercise and we're not just talking 10,000 steps, although that's probably the right thing to do is get you one of those Gizmos and do your 10,000 steps, but what we are also talking about is some higher level of exertion every now and then. You don't have to go run marathons or swim miles in the pool, but the more you can do the better. If you've always said to yourself, "I'm going to get in shape," if you've just had a diagnosis of colon cancer, now's the time to do it. It may help your outcome. The second, aspirin, baby aspirin, 81 milligrams daily.

If you forget, don't take two. That's been long known to help reduce polyps, but now newer evidence says it may also reduce recurrences of colon cancer. Number three, vitamin D. Sunblock and everything else has made us vitamin D deficient, and we know that low vitamin D increases your risk of colon cancer, but it also turns out may increase the risk of relapse. Supplement your diet with some vitamin D, get outside, get a little bit of sun, not so much to make the dermatologist mad at me, but get a little bit of sun and convert some vitamin D the good old fashioned way. Fourth, this is the most fun one of all, is tree nuts. And what does that mean? It means not peanuts, so it's like almonds, and cashews, and all of that stuff. Pecans, nuts that grows on trees, this group of foods actually seems to help in terms of colon cancer survival.

When I joke with patients about what Moses really brought down from the mountain, you remember he came down twice. The first time I think was exercise, aspirin, vitamin D, and tree nuts, but we were partying. So he broke those, went up and got the other set that we call the Ten Commandments. So good living, exercise, aspirin, vitamin D, tree nuts prevent colon cancer, prevent recurrences.
