WA has reported another 2137 cases of COVID overnight, but the number of people hospitalised with the virus has edged down to 21.

The number of cases fell from 2423 on Thursday, a day after WA's hard borders were removed and about 5000 people were airlifted to Perth Airport from motorways and overseas on the first day of quarantine-free travel.

In another encouraging sign, none of the hospital's COVID patients are being treated in the intensive care unit, and no further deaths have been reported.

A woman believed to be in her 80s from the Greater Southern region died from the virus earlier this week, with the death toll remaining at two during the Omicron outbreak in WA.

The state's active case count is now just under 10,000.

At the same time as the Omicron outbreak - 10,000 active cases - 74 people were hospitalized in South Australia (four in intensive care, one on a ventilator).

There were 11,600 active cases in Queensland as of December 31, with 64 people in hospital and one in intensive care.

On Tuesday, 88 COVID patients were monitored at home as part of the McGowan government's COVID home care program.

A regional breakdown of cases shows that COVID is starting to rise in the Goldfields (23 new infections reported) and the Southwest (42 new infections).

All other country regions also reported new cases: Pilbara (17), Midwest (10), Wheat Belt (8), Great South (4) and Kimberley (2).

About 14,553 people were tested at PCR clinics on Thursday.

The third-dose vaccination rate for Western Australians aged 16 and over is now 66 per cent.
